Is there a person in that box?

This museum is a fantastic temple to the imagination. And it is ENORMOUS!

It would take several visits to see everything this wonderful institution has to offer. Therefore, today, I will focus, on the incredible Ancient Egyptian section. I had forgotten how magnificent their historical finds and imaginative layout is, so visiting with City Kid for our Ancient Egypt project took my breath away.

As you immediately enter into the Ancient Egypt section, you are invited to walk a reconstructed tomb. Being an atrophied and conforming adult, I immediately pulled back from entering – are we allowed to do so? –  while City Kid charged in with two feet. It was thrilling.

Around the corner is the beautiful and expansive reconstruction of the Temple of Dendur. The wall of windows fills the room with light, and you can climb the few stairs and enter the  temple ruin. It is an inspiring entrance to a conversation about this ancient culture.

There are many more rooms with statues, hieroglyphics, paintings, artifacts, etc. We highly recommend.

Entry and a year’s membership is free with your NYC-ID card. Otherwise, it is a suggested donation of $25.
It is open every day.
Check the website for different times – they vary on different days.
Location: 5th Avenue, between 79th and 84th streets.
The cafes are in beautiful settings within the museum. The food is standard cafe fare and slightly inflated prices.

Top-Tip

It is worth checking their website regularly, as the Met also has wonderful events throughout the year. We went to their celebration of the Lunar New Year in February. They opened up entire areas of the museum, including their education rooms downstairs, for many museum-inspired activities, for all ages. We went from City Kid designing a feather to a Chinese tea demonstration to making an Chinese opera mask. It is worth checking out their website with regularity for their incredible events.

They have regular family events, including story time for younger kids and an Art Trek for older City Kids. Here is a link to their family events page.

There is a great playground on the north side of 84th street if your City Kid needs to let off steam.
