Jane’s Carousel

City-Kid Review:

It was fun! Can we go again?

Jane’s Carousel is a splendid carousel with uniquely New York vistas. It really is wonderful.

The carousel is open all year round, with fewer open days in the Winter months, but I have included it here because spring and summer is when you get spectacularly blue-skied views of some of New York’s greatest landmarks.
For a second.
As you carousel around and around, this bridge here, that bridge there…

Jane’s Carousel,  originally hails from the height of the boom-time steel era, 1922, appropriately enough beginning its life in the once big steel-making Youngstown, Ohio.  In 1984, Jane and David Walentas bought the carousel in auction. Jane then, lovingly, restored the carousel with her team. They commissioned a wonderful glass pavilion in which to house the carousel, on the banks of the East River, and it was relocated in its beautiful restored glory, in 2011.

It is a fun ride. We highly recommend.

Need to Knows:

Jane’s Carousel is located in the DUMBO part of Brooklyn Bridge Park, between the Manhattan Bridge and the Brooklyn Bridge. The closest subway is A/C train to High Street, just come out of the station and head towards the river. You can also take the F to York Street or the 2/3 to Clark Street, and head towards the Brooklyn Bridge. You will walk past the famous Grimaldi’s and Juliana’s pizzerias, probably with lines outside both. Once you get to the river walk, turn right and you will see the carousel.

Cost: $2

Top-Tip

On the way to the carousel, chances are you will walk past long lines at the famous rival pizzerias and Juliana’s and Grimaldi’s. Rather than wait in line, order pizza to go and enjoy eating it down on the water front.

Do you have a favorite carousel? Please tell us about it, below.
