Madison Square Park Kids Concerts

City-Kid Review:

City Kid Dance Freak
I like the squirrel.

Everybody in the House…..Okay, this is Madison Square Park, not Garden.

Are these kids concerts? Yes.
Are the musicians dialing in their day job? Absolutely not. This IS their day job.
YUP – these are kids concerts and the quality of the bands is really high.

We have been going for a few years now.

The musicians are dedicated and have a great time; they are tight, well-rehearsed, the music is great and the atmosphere is fun.

We particularly recommend the band, Michael and the Rockness Monsters. If you ever see them in a line-up, see them. They are fun. However, every kid concert we have attended in Madison Square Park has been great. For the grown-ups, too!

They only let you in if you are accompanied by a child. One year, I got separated from my family and they wouldn’t let me in to find them because I was unaccompanied. I love that!

Folks bring blankets or you can stand at the side, and the kids are upfront and center in front of the stage.

Afterwards, should you choose, there are a vast array of eateries should you desire to go out for lunch, or you can stay and picnic in the park.

The concerts go on until mid August.

Need to Knows:

The concerts run from 10.00am-11.00am in Madison Square Park.

The programs are free and the flyer says they are rain or shine (I have never gone in the rain, so I don’t know what they do when it rains)

Madison Square Park is located between Madison Avenue and 5th Avenue, at the junction of Broadway, kitty corner to the flatiron building. That’s between 23rd and 26th. Nearest subways are the R/W at 23rd street, and the F/M and 6 are only a block away.

Tons of food places nearby including the Shake Shack inside the park itself and Eataly on the other side of 5th and Broadway.

Top-Tip

There is a great playground in Madison Square Park, including water fountains in the summer. Bring a change of clothes or a swimsuit!

Seaglass Carousel

City-Kid Review:

Can we go again? I want to go on the one which goes up and down.
Me: We did.
Yeah, I know. I want to go on it again.

This is a beautifully modern carousel. Shaped like a metallic soft-serve or a miniature metal NY Guggenheim, the Seaglass Carousel is nestled in the heart of Battery Park.

This is a enchanting experience. LED lights gently dance with water effect lights as underwater music plays, creating an imaginative underwater-inspired ride. Differently shaped fish in mother-of-pearl colors, turn around individually and in groups, as some travel gently up and down.

There is no central column as in a traditional carousel. Instead, four motors control turntables from beneath the floor.

The building was inspired by the former NY Aquarium which stood on the current site of Castle Clinton. Built in 1896 it welcomed 2.5 million visitors until it closed in 1941.

We highly recommend.

Need to Knows:

This is a beautiful carousel.
Admission: $5 per ride.
Open daily, 10am-10pm.

Location: Inside Battery Park. As you face Castle Clinton, turn left and you will see the metal and glass structure.
Nearest subways are 1 to South Ferry, R to Whitehall Street (W on weekdays), 4&5 to Bowling Green

There are plenty of places to eat nearby, including the Battery Gardens Restaurant right next door.

Top-Tip

You can visit the Battery Park Urban Farm next door, take a trip to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island (tickets from Castle Clinton, NOT from the folks wandering around with flyers and Statue of Liberty foam hats), take a free trip on the Staten island Ferry, with great views of Lady Liberty, take a ferry to Governor’s Island. The City Clipper also docks at Battery Park.

Have fun!
