Queens County Farm Museum
City-Kid Review:
I rode a horse. I hugged a goat. I like it.
The earth has turned and, finally, the snow has ceased. Or has it? That’s the constant question in NYC in March/April. Should we pack away the snow boots? Or buy some on sale and be able to use them in the same month? Ah, questions, questions.
Once the city starts begins her slow ascent into the sweaty heat of August, it becomes time to visit to Queens County Farm Museum. Any time is a great time to visit this farm, the oldest continuously working farm in New York State. (New York really does have everything, right?)
And, before you say, ‘well, it’s not really a farm, though, is it?’ I must stop you. It is a working farm.
Yes, it happens to be in a suburb of Queens.
And it, also, happens to cater to the masses in terms of amusements and farm experiences.
But it is, nevertheless, a working farm and you can buy their organic produce from their in-house farm stand. I recommend their kale. It is delicious.
Queens County Farm has several festivals throughout the year. In the Spring, they have their Children’s Festival and their Spring Festival. In the fall, they have their, ahem, Fall Festival which is tremendously fun as they have a Pumpkin Patch and a Maize Maze, in which we genuinely get lost every time. They have expanded their festivals in recent years to include a massive fun fair with all sorts of rides.
Need to Knows:
The Farm is open daily from 10am – 5pm, with the exception of New Year’s Day, Labor Day, Christmas Day and Thanksgiving.
General admission is free to the public except during special events.
Tours of the farmhouse happen on weekends. School groups visit during the week.
Location: Queens County Farm Museum, 73-50 Little Neck Parkway, Floral Park, New York 11004-1129
Top-Tip
They have daily compost drop-off and you can buy their eggs from their gift shop. When the farm stand opens in mid-may, avail yourself of their produce. It is delicious.
