Beach by Boat – Now that Is Some Style Travel!
City-Kid Review:
Can we do the boat again?
Something really great which our current city mayor, Bill DeBlasio, has done, is he has opened up chunks of the city by having a ferry service to them. And the ferry service is the cost of a subway ride. It’s frickin’ fabuloso! (Yeah, it made me get all New Yawk on ya there, for a g-d minute!!)
It seemed too good to be true, but it really is great. You pick up the boat at Pier 11. The whole ride takes just under an hour from Manhattan, but it doesn’t feel like it. Very different from taking the subway.
Something we discovered is there is a little bus that takes you to all of the various beaches. You can, also, walk the short way to the nearby beach on the opposite side of the spit of land from where the ferry drops you off.
Honestly, this feels like a trip away from NYC even while you are staying in NYC. The sea breeze, the sea air, those positive ions…what’s not to love?
Highly recommend.
Need to Knows:
You can catch the subway although the ferry is part of the adventure. They run half hourly on weekdays and twice an hour on weekends. You can see the schedule, here.
Location: Pier 11 – Far Rockaway
Cost: $2.75. Just like the subway! Bikes cost an additional $1
Food places are limited near the ferry. We brought our own food. However, you can buy snacks on the ferry. There are, also, plenty of food places near the A train stops, particular 116th street, as well as the usual beach stores. Some passengers recommended a Mexican restaurant on the beach side of where the ferry drops you off.
Information correct at time of writing.
Top-Tip
Take sandwiches and an umbrella. And plenty of sunblock. The ferry sells plenty of things if you forget anything.
