Blast Off!
City-Kid Review:
I want to go back. Can we go back, tomorrow?
The second floor of the Intrepid…
…Go to the back. You will find the most splendid interactive children’s area. You can lie on a submarine bunk-bed. You can sit in a control tower and press buttons and move levers. You can lie on your back in a satellite – City Kid’s favorite – talk about buttons and switches! Choose your transport..helicopter, submarine…For a child who loves transportation and getting in and out of vehicles, it is heavenly. It is spacious, too.
For older children there is a regular demonstration of something vehicular and there is much to see for adults.
Need to Knows:
There is a mess hall downstairs in the, well, the mess hall. You can get flatbread pizzas and soup, as well as other junky foods.
Admission is expensive but they do have reciprocal arrangements with other Science museums., which grant free or reduced entry. Otherwise, admission is $26 which includes the ‘Growler’ submarine – a nuclear submarine which immediately put me in mind of Das Boot. City Kid loved it. Children 2-15 cost $19.
Location: Pier 86, W 46th St & 12th Ave, New York, NY 10036

Top-Tip
When we first arrived there was a long line for the Growler. It is worth checking back because an hour later we could walk right on. Sometimes, large bus or school groups arrive so, I recommend checking the line regularly so you don’t have to stand on one.
