Brooklyn Children’s Museum
City-Kid Review:
I like the ice cream truck, and the water playroom and the light tunnel.
What a wonderful place this is, built with children’s minds in mind. The kids look at the world, their curiosity, their desire to play and to learn through play. No surprise, really – the Brooklyn Children’s Museum was the world’s first children’s museum, first built in 1899. This is obviously not that original building, as it is quite modern in design and structure.
Firstly, the museum is capacious and has a ton of activities for all age groups. City Kid really likes the young kids area which has a ton of fun things to do, including a puppet theatre, fun instruments, a reading nook, a baby area and a wonderful water play area.
The rest of the museum is wonderfully imaginative, with a neon-lit passageway which leads to little shops, relating to different NYC cultures. There are many interactivities within these different stores; opportunities to learn as well as pure imaginative fun.
Upstairs is an capacious hall within which are changing exhibits. They really have created this with kids in mind.
Need to Knows:
Brooklyn Children’s Museum is located at 145 Brooklyn Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11213
Admission is $11 for everyone. There are reciprocal relationships. You can get in for free or 50% off, if you have an ASTC membership and half price with an ACM membership. Call ahead to make sure it still applies. Cool Culture members can get in for free.
Your NYC-ID card will get free entry for one person – the cardholder – and a $4 discount for an additional guest – so for your City Kid, for example.
There is a good food place with a grilled cheese ‘truck’, with a small and delicious range of sandwiches and salads. They have organic ice cream and, I found out, you can get a child size portion of ice cream. You may, also, bring your own food and eat it in the food area, which has plenty of chairs, tables and space for the kids to run around.
Top-Tip
On Thursdays from 2-6pm, it is pay-what-you-wish entry.
Check the Brooklyn Children’s Museum website in advance, for appropriate events….there are a ton.
