Jalopy Theatre: A Variety Show for Kids
City-Kid Review:
It must be the magician.
I guess so. Did you like him?
Yes.
A variety show for kids. Yup.
In a kid-sized theatre.
How awesome is that?
Uh…very.
Justin ‘Yo-Yo’ Weber blew my mind. How on earth did he make the diabolo go up like that? City Kid got to be on stage with him, holding spinning plates.
My partner is the clever-clogs who found the wonderfulness that is Little Laffs at the Jalopy Theatre.
There are three acts for each performance. For example, one three act line up might be a magician, a juggler and a musician. You might get a clown. You don’t know until you show up. But it will always be three amazing 30 minute. Specifically geared towards a young audience.
Perfect.
When you think about it, a variety performance suits the attention span of City Kids perfectly.
….A little bit of this….a little bit of that….equals….A fun day out.
It really is fabulous. We love it.
The theatre space itself is really sweet and right-sized for little ones, who sit at the front of the audience, with the adults behind.
It runs once a month through the theatre season, from October- May.
Oh, and the price of the adult or family ticket includes a bloody mary or mimosa. I KNOW!
If only all theatre could be as fun. Plus, you can go next door for a delicious and reasonably priced brunch.
We highly recommend.
Need to Knows:
The Jalopy Theatre is located on the Carroll Gardens side of the Red Hook/Carroll Gardens border. The exact address is 315 Columbia St, Brooklyn 11231. The closest subways are Carroll Street on the F or G trains, and then its a little bit a walk to the theatre.
Ticket prices: $5 child, $10 adult, $25 family. The adult/family ticket includes a Bloody Mary or Mimosa.
Age range: 3-9 years old.
Top-Tip
Jalopy Theatre offer folk classes as well as other music classes for kids, as well as other shows. Check out their site for more details.
Next door to the theatre is the Jalopy Tavern which hosts a delicious brunch from 11am-3pm. If they have the vegetable empanada special I recommend it. The home fries and the breakfast burrito was a hit with the City Kids. All the food is excellent and very reasonably priced.
