New York Aquarium

City-Kid Review:

I like the boat and the seals.

We happened to have a rental car, an extra week day, and a Zoo membership, so we tootled on out to Coney Island, to go to the NYC Aquarium. At the time it was – and I believe still is –  under construction, but it was still a wonderful, albeit short, experience. On entry, you immediately walk into a dark room and the opening seascape is stunning. The sharks were in a temporary tank – how on earth do they move them? – and we could get a very close look at them, as they swam right up to the glass. They have a ton more mammalian aquatic animals than at the other zoos, given they are an aquarium, and each one is delightful in its own way.

There was a small boat on the inside which City Kid loved climbing in, going to all sorts of imaginary islands. I suspect that may have been the highlight of our adventure here, although she did love ‘chatting’ with the animals.

FYI – due to construction and the time of year we were there, there was nothing in the way of  food or concession stands.

Need to Knows:

They are under construction, so no food is available. Their website says they have carts in the warmer weather. We did not see that due to the time of year we went.

Location: 602 Surf Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11224.

Admission for everyone over 3 years old is $11.95. It is free with any NY zoo membership (Central Park, Bronx, Queens, Prospect Park Zoos) and with your NYC-ID – but you have to get that membership at the Bronx Zoo.

Top-Tip:

Combine your trip with a visit to the beach!

Got fish? Does anyone have an update on the renovation? Please share with us, below.
